When the question is posed, the College Life group scans the row of three persons sitting at the front of the room. The three bend, sitting on the edge of their chairs, about to stand but then, only one makes the full transition and is revealed as the person whose most embarrassing moment was just read aloud for the group. This was the scene at our College Life meeting last night, in which Evan and I led the skit.
This was our last College Life, memorable for many reasons, including the fact that it marked a significant change in the way College Life at UNC/Duke is run. Traditionally, new freshmen who went through College Life and then became Young Life leaders were placed on teams during the month of March. This year they will be placed in November. There are many uncertainties with the new system… will these freshmen be ready to head back to high school a mere 6 months after they left? Have they learned enough about Young Life in only 10 weeks to understand what they’re getting into? Have we adequately equipped them to be servants of Christ, committed to a relationship with Him and with high school students? I want to ask, will the real people who will be committed to this ministry please stand up? But it’s not that easy, and the bottom line is that the short time frame leads to greater uncertainty, which forces us to trust that God will bring forward those He has called, and He will equip them!
