Snackin’ on Legs

July 28, 2008

Crab legs that is.  Last night we went out for a true Alaskan dinner.  Our restaurant featured a wide variety of Alaskan paraphernalia including a stuffed brown bear, fishing gear and Alaskan themed posters.  With Evan constantly encouraging me to eat new things, we had several kinds of fried seafood, including cod, clam strips, scallops and shrimp.  We also tried some snow crab, which turned out to be delicious.

Delicious but a little hard to break into.  Lisa and Chip even ate some and agreed that it was pretty good.  They’re not big on seafood.  Tomorrow’s our last day in Alaska and Lisa and Chip have been great hosts.  Thanks so much for a good time!  We have a red eye tonight and then we’re on the road again.

Chugach State Park

July 25, 2008

On the 8th day of the temperature in Anchorage reaching over 65 degrees in 2008, we hiked in Chugach State Park on the Flat Top trail.  It was a fun hike and had spectacular views of Anchorage, the Cook Inlet and snow-capped mountains in the distance.

BYOP

July 22, 2008

So Kelly and I are living the life at the Mt. McKinley Princess Lodge, in Denali State Park. Laughing has been our main activity as the only thing grayer than the skies here is the color of the other visitors’ hair. We are having fun relaxing but to some extent I at least feel totally unprepared for Alaska. When we told people we were coming to Alaska everyone mentioned that it would not ever get dark while we were here but no one ever mentioned that it was not going to get light either. Check out the weather report.

Everyone here is very fixated on seeing the breath taking view of Mt. McKinley, but we were expecting to see this

but instead we got this

Despite the weather we are enjoying ourselves. Future trips to Alaska I will remember, BYOP, Bring Your Own Parka.

What do you do in Alaska?

July 20, 2008

Hike and Eat. At least that is what the Travises are doing. Despite the midnight sun, and it really is like day time until the middle of the night, we are sleeping well and late. After we woke up I (Evan) made waffles and then we got ready for the day. Lisa, Kelly and I went to Barnes and Noble and picked up guide book to help us explore Alaska. After that we immediately put the book to use and picked a hike and lunch spot.

Garcia’s was pretty good. Mexican food even this north is still good. Then for the hike we went to Thunder Bird Falls.

It’s Been a Long Day…

July 8, 2008

5 days of hard work later, Evan and I are back in Durham and now own a partially renovated house in Knoxville, TN.  Last Wednesday, we moved all our belongings from our storage unit to one 26 foot Uhaul (the largest size in the do it yourself industry) and on Thursday morning we hit the road for Knoxville.  After a late start, a long stop in Greensboro and a lot of driving, we made it to Knoxville just in time for our closing, but not in time for a walk through.  No worries though, we made it through the closing and shortly thereafter, we owned a 1960’s ranch that we’d never seen except in pictures.  The house turned out to be great, even better than the pictures in some ways, but I did have a moment of panic when it looked like our king sized canopy bed would not fit in any of the rooms.  Thanks to the hard work of the Chesneys and my parents, over the weekend we were able to paint several rooms and completely renovate one of the bathrooms (almost).  The small pink bathroom shown in a previous post was torn out down to the studs thanks to the capable hands of Evan and Curtis.  Then over the next few days it was put back together, complete with new flooring, walls and plumbing.  Experienced tilers Evan and Dad made quick work of the shower walls and tile flooring, and all that remains to be done is a little grout work and sink and toilet installation… but we’ll save that for when we move for good in August.  I’ll post some pics then since our camera was still buried in boxes during this trip!  And don’t worry, Mom and I were able to squeeze our bed and dresser into one of the rooms.
