A new entrance.

January 23, 2009

Hmm.  I thought I’d better make this post a good one since it’s been a while, and I was trying to make a philosophical analysis of our latest home project (installing a new door) and how it corresponds to January, the month of entry into the new year.  Fitting, right?  That’s really about all I have to say about it, so without further ado, below are pictures from our latest project.  You might be thinking, “I thought you were working on the bathroom?  Where are those pictures?” and you would be right.  We are working on the bathroom, albeit still slowly, so those pictures will be forthcoming.  We do not claim to be strong finishers, just enthusiastic beginners.  The door was a pretty good one day project, and we did finish it to the extent that we do not have a gaping hole in the front of our house, but eventually it’ll be painted and touched up, so we can’t quite call it completely finished.  Regardless, we’re pleased with the results.  Three cheers for curb appeal.

Below is the original.  It’s hard to see, but it was just a flat teal door with an ugly screen door and large piece of wavy (groovy) glass to the right side.

The door was really heavy, but fit fairly well in the hole.

We had the door mostly in, but what home project is complete without a mid-project trip to Home Depot?  So off we went, with a semi-locked up house, to get a little more wood to frame the door in.

It’s in…

And it works!  (I am taking the “cheesy ta-da” pictures these days because the last time Evan was in one, when we premiered the painted living room, it ended up on my family’s Christmas letter.)

Bathroom Preview

January 2, 2009

We’re still working hard on remodeling our second upstairs bathroom as mentioned in a previous post, but it’s been slow going thanks to vacation and Evan’s knee surgery.  However, we rung in the new year by working on it for a straight 12 hours yesterday, and though we still have a ways to go, here’s a quick preview of what we’ve done so far!

We tiled the shower/tub, but haven’t grouted yet…

We painted a couple of the walls…personal-pics-015

And installed new lighting…

And we installed the new toilet, after much to do about the wax ring.  The whole toilet box, including wax ring, has been sitting in the carport for a month, in 40 degree weather.  We didn’t think it a problem until the instructions explicitly stated that the wax ring needed to be at 70 degrees to be installed.  Twice.  So we microwaved it for a while, and then Evan touched it off with a little heat from the hair dryer.
